of the candidates and all i have to say is, i love you back. thank you. >> michael steele, these have become pivot points for the candidates. we saw that with rick santorum. we saw it with mitt romney. >> let me ask you a question. i'd love to get the students' feedback on this. how did you feel in listening to those two sound bites. which one actually made you move toward that candidate if not physically, at least a little bit emotionally? and that's the rub right there for mitt romney. who gave, i thought, a very -- what's the word. sort of clean. it was like going to the doctor's office. it was everything -- it was sanitized. rick santorum was like you could -- that moment when he says i love you back. you could almost feel, thank you. yeah, i love you, too, man. it was a very different kind of connection. and that's been the undertone that's been driving a lot of the angst for the base is that i'll go fight for you, but i really want to go fight for you. i just don't want to fight for you because you have the moniker of gop nominee on your head. and so the broader public picks up on these thin

needs to channel the one line zingers of a michael steele who is joining us now from washington. seriously, michael steele, what is going on with mitt rop any, will he come out as a better version of the ipad? >> i don't know, it's been six years in the making of this thing, i don't know. the problem is, look, this is the guy, this is who he is. so, instead of trying to package him into ronald reagan or to bill clinton or some other, you know, bigger than life political figure, let him be himself, so he may be a little uncomfortable standing on the stage. build around that. make that part of the theme about him so people feel comfortable with that instead of judging him against other candidates or likely can dade d like a chris christie, make the argument for your candidacy, but most importantly for your future administration, because that is what everyone, including the base is looking to hear. that is what will move them toward you. so, until you -- until they get comfortable with mitt romney, his team around him and stop worrying about the gaffes and the foot in mouth disease

the delegates in hand before tampa. >> the beginning of the end says mark halperin. michael steele, you once said that mitt romney, the brother just can't bake the cake. it looks like the oven may be hot enough for romney. let's look at the winner board. romney at 47% of the vote in illinois. rick santorum at 35%. ron paul at 9% is, gingrich at 8%. more staggering i guess is the delegate total romney at 485, santorum at 193, gingrich at 137, paul at 34. what do you make of it? >> i agree with park. he's clearly and always been kind of the guy to beat and been out there, but it doesn't mean you're not going to have tensions going into this convention that i still don't believe he'll have 1144 when he gets to tampa. he'll have to negotiate that. i don't see how he wins 50 plus percent of the delegates. he got 47 here in illinois, which was tailor-made for him. illinois's a state where he should have had 52, 53% of the vote in which case that -- when you hit that threshold, you get all the dels under the rules. if you're still winning the way he's winning, it's all proportional. tell me where y

and michael steele is chairman of the republican national party and an msnbc political analyst. let's see how long we agree. there are several possible outcomes. there's two states. how many outcomes can there be from the votes tonight in mississippi and alabama. first, let's say santorum wins both tonight. if that happens, that means newt gets blown out of the race, i think. and santorum secures the position of clearly number-one challenger to mitt romney. let's stop. here's another possibility. gingrich could win both tonight. he's from that area. he's from georgia. that could hit santorum, which helps romney. it keeps him in the race. third, you could have a gingrich/santorum split tonight. each one winning a state. if that happens, no big changes. finally, romney could take one of the states, say mississippi. that's big for romney because if he wins mississippi and newt wins alabama, that's very bad for santorum and very good for romney. that's my view. let's go through your thinking. >> i agree with that. >> all that? >> i agree those are the basic four scenarios. i guess i agree with th

to is there is still an uphill climb to get to 1,144 delegates by mitt romney. michael steel that devised this system, he was on your network a couple of weeks ago, and he said it would be very difficult for romney to get to 1,144. i spoke last week with someone with rick santorum's super pac, and they have a strategy in line, the santorum campaign, of infiltrating a lot of caucus states that have non-binding contests and trying to up the delegate count and take delegates away from mitt romney. the margin for error to get to 1,144 is still very slim, not a slam dunk by any means. >> you believe this is still a reasonable chance for newt gingrich to be a player here? >> yes, i think anybody, when i do the delegate math here, and i think the key date is april 24th. that is the key date. that is the pennsylvania and new york primaries are that day. i think rick santorum has to win his home state of pennsylvania and has to stop romney from getting all 95 out of new york f those two things happen, this race is going to go until at least june 5th because the calendar in may is very friendly towards rick sa

for republicans to reach out. herman cain is a very strong supporter of mine. i worked for years with michael steele. j.c. watts is a very strong supporter of mine. i have had a more managedical effort to include african-americans in my campaign than any other republican. i think this is part of this that i am proud of. professor of carnegie, leading african-american is endorsing me. i think there are a number of people who give us a much broader reach than the other candidates. >> greta: you know, i know your time is limited. every candidate's time is limited. but i have been monitoring this. i haven't seen one republican candidate and i have not seen president obama go into the inner cities in the last two years and talk to these people in the inner cities whose unemployment rate is dreadfully high and have that conversation. they are not going to the town hall meetings and not watching the news and they are excluded from the process. >> why don't you come with me and let's do that? when i was speaker of the house, we had town hall meetings in washington, d.c. i think i am the only speaker
